APA template for citing an AI chat

 

AI Company Name. (year, month day). Title of chat in italics [Description, such as Generative AI chat].

     Tool Name / Model. URL of the chat
  • Parenthetical citation: (AI Company Name, year)
  • Narrative citation: AI Company Name (year)

MLA template for citing an AI chat

 

"Text of prompt" prompt. AI Tool, Tool Version, company that created the tool, day month. year, URL.
  • Parenthetical Citation: ("First few words of the prompt").
  • Narrative Citation: ("First few words of the prompt")

Note that MLA recommends omitting the author element when citing AI.

  • When the major style guides first created recommended templates for citing AI chats, URLs were not included. In 2025, most tools began featuring a share button that can be used to generate stable URLs for chat transcripts. The major style guides have revised their recommended templates to include these URLs.

 

  • Individual publishers are developing policies for AI use and formats for citing AI. Policies and formats can change quickly. Check for the latest policies and formats before you begin writing and check again before submitting your work for publication.
