In October 2023, the library shared the news with the campus community that UMM was planning to cancel three large database subscriptions: Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Elsevier. The cancellation plan was precipitated by a $325,000 UMM library collection budget shortfall in FY24. Montana Tech and other UMM affiliates shared these subscriptions through a consortium purchasing agreement. Each university paid a portion of the subscription costs based on institutional student FTE.
After receiving campus feedback and working to further negotiate with database vendors, all consortium members were able to retain subscriptions to both the Wiley database and the Taylor & Francis database. There were no changes to those ejournal packages.
The subscription to the Elsevier ScienceDirect Freedom Package was cost-prohibitive and was discontinued on January 1, 2024.
