This guide is an introduction to the library for students enrolled in ECIV.

Information Literacy

The library is here to provide you with the resources and services that you need to further develop your information literacy skills.

To be information literate, a person must be able to, "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." (Association of College and Research Libraries, 1989, para. 3).

Information has Value

Information has value. One aspect of information literacy is understanding and acknowledging the value of information.

Three practices for valuing information:

  • Giving credit to the original ideas of others through proper attribution and citation
  • Understanding that intellectual property is a legal and social construct that varies by culture
  • Articulating the purpose and distinguishing characteristics of copyright, fair use, open access, and the public domain
